Although there is no single "best" dental insurance plan, depending on your needs, some plans may work better for you and your family than others. Dental Insurance Plans differ primarily in the amount of the monthly premium you would have to pay for your coverage and in the amount you'll have to pay when dental services are rendered. Some plans will require that you pay a certain co-payment for services, or meet a specific deductible before you can receive any dental benefits. Other plans may even limit coverage to a specific dollar-amount maximum per year (for example, a maximum budget of $1000 a year which, once used up, you would have to cover the rest).
When reviewing your dental insurance options and the benefits you want, here are a few questions to ask yourself:
- How much will it cost me on a monthly basis?
- Do I want lower monthly premiums or more benefits?
- Do I have to meet a deductible before I receive any benefits? How much would I be willing to pay for a deductible? Once the deductible is met, how much will the dental insurance provider pay for my services?
- What dentists participate in the plan's network? Are these dentists ones that my family and I would like to see?
- If I used a dentist outside the plan's network, how much will I have to pay?
- Are there waiting periods for certain dental procedures?
